Cliff's key concept sketches for the final designs of the main characters in 'Baza Baza'' got the design engine rolling in the pre-production phase of the Project:
Some dramatic color treatments of my concept drawings of the 'Boss' creatures from the Game document for 'Terrapin'
I have recently started using Zbrush for conceptualizing characters. Zbrush is the closest thing to working with clay, which I used to create characters with for stop motion work. It takes a little longer than just sketching something up - but the payoff is that you have a usable model once you've finished designing. Here are some Zbrush models I built very recently; 3 from the Terrapin project, and a caricature of 'The Donald' for a short.
Two versions of the same character from Terrapin here in extreme polar opposite style treatments: 'Cartoon' version top left (low poly retopo with displacement and normal maps which I rendered in Maya / Vray) (top Left), second from top left the hires model in Zbrush, finally the extreme realism version Top right (the humanoid version (low poly with Maya Vray) ). Also one of the 'Bosses' upper right in progress, and 'The Donald' (low Poly with Maya / Vray shaded hair)' Bottom Right - a 'Collie' character in progress for a client: from high poly Zbrush model to low poly retopo Maya Model with Vray fur and 'n-hair' for the longer fur.
